A construction commencement ceremony took place at the site of the 700 megawatt Baganuur Power Plant on Wednesday, in the presence of Prime Minister Ch.Saikhanbileg and other government officials.
Presenting the opening remarks at the ceremony, Ch.Saikhanbileg said, “Mongolia is going to build its first power station based on a mine. The government is starting big changes in the energy policy by commencing this project.”
The PM also mentioned other mega projects in the energy sector, including the Buuruljuut power station to be built based on the Buuruljuut coal deposit, the Egiin Gol hydropower station that will be built based on the resources of the Egiin River, and the Tavan Tolgoi power station.
Ch.Saikhanbileg emphasized that the commencing of the Baganuur Power Plant project is an indication of the successful cooperation of Mongolia and China in the energy sector. He added that Mongolia successfully implemented the Amgalan Thermal Power Plant project in cooperation with China and commissioned the plant last month. “Thermal Power Plant III was expanded by 50 megawatts, and now we will focus on the Baganuur and Buuruljuur power plants,” he noted.
“Baganuur Power Plant is a project that will start development and be a representation of Baganuur. Following this development, new work and new life will flourish here. In three and half years, we will see a huge power plant with the capacity of 700 megawatts,” highlighted the Prime Minister.
Ch.Saikhanbileg said that he is confident that the project’s contractor, China Nuclear Industry 22, will successfully finalize the project on time with the latest technology. He added that the Government of Mongolia and regional authorities will provide all kinds of support to complete the project.
In April, Baganuur Power LLC and Invest Mongolia Agency established a concession agreement for the Baganuur Power Plant project on build-operate-transfer conditions. The project will provide over 300 people with permanent jobs and create around 2,500 new jobs. Officials underline that the power plant will greatly contribute to the district’s development, resolving the energy and heat demands of a proposed industrial technology park and student housing that will be established in Baganuur.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Baganuur Power Plant took place in the presence of Minister of Energy D.Zorigt, Minister of Industry D.Erdenebat, and the Chinese Ambassador to Mongolia.
